Early Films by G. B. Jones

KAG is pleased to present two early films by G. B. Jones, a Canadian artist, filmmaker, zine writer, and one of the founders of queercore. The screening will be followed by a talk by queer theory and film researcher Yuka Kanno, who will discuss the films and explore queer theory.

About G. B. Jones: G. B. Jones is an artist, film director, and musician. She is known for creating the queer punk zine J.D.s and for her illustrations in Tom Girls. Jones played drums, guitar, and provided background vocals in the all-female post-punk band Fifth Column from the early 1980s to the late 1990s. She collaborated with Bruce LaBruce on the queer punk zine J.D.s, which helped establish the queercore scene.

Jones is also a highly acclaimed artist, having exhibited at venues such as the Columbus Museum of Art (Columbus), Participant Inc (New York), Mercer Union (Toronto), Power Plant (Toronto), Kunsthalle Exnergasse (Vienna), and White Columns (New York). She has also performed at AKA Artist Run Space (Winnipeg), Muncher Kunstverein (Munich), and Schwules Museum (Berlin).

About Yuka Kanno: Yuka Kanno completed her PhD in Visual Studies at the University of California, Irvine. She is currently a professor at the Graduate School of Global Studies, Doshisha University. Kanno specializes in film and visual culture studies and queer studies. She is the author of Queer Cinema: To Be in the World and Time in a Different Way (Film Art, 2021), editor of Queer Cinema Studies (Koyoshobo, 2021), and Archival Trauma of Emotion, Sexuality and Lesbian Public Culture (Kadensha, 2024), among other works.
